Microsoft Corp. has announced additional job cuts, following the 10,000 layoffs announced earlier this year.
The latest round of cuts, primarily affecting employees in customer service, support, and sales, was reported by GeekWire on Monday. While the exact number of layoffs was not disclosed, a filing with the Washington state’s Employment Security Department indicated that 276 workers in the Seattle area would be affected.
Microsoft has not provided an immediate response to requests for comment regarding these developments.
In January, Microsoft’s Chief Executive, Satya Nadella, had stated that approximately 10,000 jobs would be eliminated, which accounted for less than 5% of the company’s global workforce. This move was part of Microsoft’s efforts to reduce costs.
The new fiscal year for Microsoft commenced on July 1.
So far this year, over 216,000 tech workers worldwide have experienced layoffs, surpassing the total number of tech-industry layoffs that occurred throughout 2022.
Despite the workforce reductions, Microsoft’s shares have shown a significant increase of 38% year-to-date. In comparison, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which includes Microsoft as a component, has gained 2.4%, while the S&P 500 has seen a 15% increase.
